Investment Levels

Food can be saved through investments at four levels.  The first two will be implemented through the proposed program;  the latter two will be recommended.

Low investment:  Improved handling, improved awareness, training, inexpensive bulk packaging

Medium investment: Processing and packaging to increase shelf life and resistance to degradation.

This includes promotion of Poverty Reduction through Village Food Processing program, developed

by the Asian Regional Office of the Food & Agricultural Orghanization to promote added value for

                  local food products.

Capital investment:  Warehousing and storage facilities

Governmental investment:  Infrastructure development such as roads, transportation, dock facilities, etc.

that promote easier handling of food.  This investment level has been included because many

programs to justify development, such as road construction, do not include the "costs" of food

                  losses resulting from poor infrastructure.
